Cabinet of Curiosities Ceramics

The precursors to museums were elaborate cabinets that housed preserved specimens of exotic insects and creatures, plant and sea life, antiquities and much more. These were purchased or collected by the passionate and adventuresome, such as Maria Sibylla Merian, who traveled to Dutch Suriname with her daughter to study the metamorphosis of insects, document that phenomenon with elegant watercolor drawings, and bring rare specimens back to Europe.
In the tradition of Maria Sibylla Merian copying her original artwork to functional goods and inspired by the collections contained in 18th century cabinets of curiosities, Laura Zindel has transferred her delicate pencil drawings of such specimens to hand built and slip cast earthenware. Her original drawings have been printed with enamel and fired to the surface of each vessel. This technique is the modern version of what was once called transferware.

All pieces should be hand washed. Do not use in oven, microwave or dishwasher.
