Ancient Greeks loved telling stories on their vases. They liked to decorate the small parts of the vase like the top and bottom with geometrical and figurative border designs. They used the biggest part of the vase to tell stories about their gods and goddesses, heroes, brave deeds, and everyday occupations. Sometimes the stories told of sporting events and sometimes they illustrated toys and games played by children, or adults going about household tasks. They enjoyed decorating their pots with images of men and women, animals and creatures, both real and imaginary ones—like centaurs (part man, part horse) and sirens (part woman, part bird). Looking at the images on the vases displayed in the museum teaches us much about life in ancient times. Tell your own stories time and again on this erasable vase.
