For the first time, this magnificently illustrated
book provides an overview of the bronze sculpture
produced in France from the 16th to 18th centuries.
Works by major sculptors such as Goujon,
Pilon, Prieur, Anguier, Puget, Girardon, Desjardins,
Coysevox, Le Lorrain, Bertrand, Caffieri, Pigalle,
and Houdon represent a spectacular phase of French
art and history ranging from the Renaissance through
Neoclassicism up to the French Revolution.
Essays by international art historians enlighten
readers about the complex relationship between sculptors, founders, and chasers when creating bronze
statues, which were usually a question of teamwork.
This volume features famous as well as little known
works, previously unpublished documents,
and studies of prestigious collections. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, alongside the Musée du Louvre and The J. Paul Getty Museum, collectively contributed a wide-range of knowledge and research, as well as assembled an unprecedented scale of major French bronze works in order to create this book. Iconographical
analyses and discussions of links to other arts will
certainly make it a key reference work on bronzes.
Catalogue accompanies the exhibition Cast in Bronze: French Sculpture from Renaissance to Revolution, on view at the Getty Center July 30-September 27, 2009.
